A lot happens between youth group gatherings.
Students have a rough day at school. They have questions about something they read in the Bible. They need encouragement, prayer, or a reminder that someone is thinking about them.
As youth leaders, we want to show up in those moments. But keeping up with students, equipping volunteers, communicating with parents, and preparing for the next gathering can fill a week pretty quickly.
That’s why we’re continuing to build Fresh Fire App—to help youth leaders walk with students throughout the week and help students build the rhythms and relationships of a lasting faith.
We’re now serving 300+ youth groups, and we’ve launched several updates to make getting started, planning discipleship, and staying connected easier. Here’s what’s new.
New Resources to Help Your Youth Group Get Started
Getting your group onto a new app takes more than sending out a download link. Students need to know what to do once they’re in. Parents want to understand how it works. Leaders need to feel comfortable using it.
We’ve added new resources to help you introduce Fresh Fire to your group and get everyone started:
- Launch Guide
- Web Portal Setup Walkthrough
- App Setup Walkthrough
- Student Walkthrough
- Leader Walkthrough
- Parent Walkthrough
Whether you’re launching Fresh Fire for the first time or welcoming new families into your ministry, these resources give you something to share instead of having to explain everything yourself.
Send the parent walkthrough before launch. Walk through the student video during youth group. Use the leader walkthrough when you bring on a new volunteer.
The goal is to help everyone feel ready to participate.
A Content Calendar to Help You Plan Ahead
You probably already think about your ministry calendar in terms of sermon series, retreats, small groups, and special events. Your plans for helping students grow during the week should fit into that same picture.
The new Content Calendar tab gives you a place to see your Fresh Fire content on a calendar and plan ahead.
As you prepare for a series, think about what students could read or practice between gatherings. A message on prayer could lead into a Bible reading plan about prayer. A conversation about serving could become a challenge students work on throughout the week.
Our youth group Bible reading plans and challenges help you carry those conversations beyond the room. The Content Calendar makes it easier to think through how it all fits together.
More Ways to Keep Conversations Going
Some of the most meaningful moments in youth ministry happen in ordinary conversations. A student shares something funny. A leader follows up on a prayer request. Someone asks a question that gets the whole group talking.
We’ve added several messaging updates to help those conversations flow:
- Message replies to make it easier to respond to a specific message.
- Pinned messages to keep important information easy to find.
- G-rated GIFs to give your group another way to have some fun.
- Image sending with role-based permissions to give your ministry control over who can share images.
Messaging activity remains part of the web portal history and safety reporting tools, helping leaders maintain visibility as their groups communicate.
Good youth group communication includes announcements and reminders, but it also gives students opportunities to be known, encouraged, and included throughout the week.
Birthdays on Your Dashboard
Remembering a student’s birthday is a small thing that can mean a lot.
We’ve added birthdays to the dashboard to help you keep those moments on your radar.
Send a message. Have their small group leader reach out. Celebrate them when you see them.
You don’t always need a big event or an elaborate plan to help a student feel seen. Sometimes remembering their birthday is enough to start a meaningful conversation.
More Control Through Admin Permissions
As your ministry grows, more people may need to help manage what happens in Fresh Fire.
Updated admin permissions give you more control over access as you involve other people in managing your group.
That matters when you’re sharing responsibilities with staff and volunteers. You want people to have the access they need to help, with permissions that fit their role.
An Optional Challenge Scoreboard
A little friendly competition can be a lot of fun in youth ministry.
The new optional Challenge Scoreboard gives you another way to engage small groups or serving teams around challenges.
It can be a helpful way to build enthusiasm and give groups something to work toward together. And because it’s optional, you can decide whether it fits your ministry.
Use it to encourage participation and celebrate students taking a step. Keep pointing them toward the purpose behind the challenge and what God might teach them through it.
New Bible Reading Plans from Shaping Student Ministry
You may have already noticed new plans available in the web portal.
These were created by the team at Shaping Student Ministry, which offers coaching, curriculum, and other resources for youth leaders.
Each of these plans has accompanying curriculum available through their website, giving you a way to connect what you teach at youth group with what students read during the week.
We’ll share more about this partnership soon. In the meantime, take a look at the new plans and consider how they could fit into an upcoming series or small group conversation.
Keep Walking With Students Throughout the Week
Our hope is that these updates make it easier for you to do the ministry you already care deeply about.
Help a new family get connected. Equip a volunteer. Remember a birthday. Follow up on a question. Give students something meaningful to read and practice before you see them again.
Those moments matter.
